We started out Read Across America week with The Cat in the Hat!! We made these Super cute Cat in the Hat glyphs with “at word” books on their bellies (A Deanna Jump idea:)
After Reading the Cat in the Hat, we did this character traits activity. I gave the students a trait of the cat and they had to think of a detail from the story to support that trait. I got this idea from Michelle at Fabulous in First.
The next day, we read The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. We filled out our story maps together. I drew and wrote on post-it notes while they kiddos filled theirs out at their desks. You can grab a copy of the story map HERE!
On Wednesday, we of course read Wacky Wednesday! When the kids came in that morning they saw wacky things going on all over our classroom!!! We charted the Wacky things that we saw!! Then, we read the book. While I read the book to the kiddos, they kept track of the wackiness on a recording sheet by using tally marks. You can grab a copy of that recording sheet HERE!!
We also learned that “Theo Leseig” is Dr. Seuss!!! (Theodore Seuss Giesel) He takes the shorted version of his first name (Theo) and spells his last name backwards. So, we all made our own Wacky names and wore them on a nametag all day! My wacky name was “Kate Esnem” 🙂
Later that day we played “wack the word” (a sight word game)
On Thursday we read Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?
We talked about what onomatopoeia was. The kids gave examples from the story and I wrote them on post-its to stick on the chart.
(I originally found this poem at Welcome to Room 36!…she used the poem for The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything)
We ended our week by reading Green Eggs and Ham!! We made green eggs and ham and tasted them. We then made a pie graph to show who liked them.
After that, we wrote a How To on how we made our green eggs and ham!! You can grab that sheet by clicking on the picture below!!
Hope you found something that you can use for next year!!! Be sure to pin these pages so you don’t forget about them:)
P.S. Check out my thing 1 & 2s that I posted about back in 2011!!! They are one of my most pinned items of all time:)
