Last week we did our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom unit. It’s always so much fun!! The kids just love this story!!
This year, I used Deedee and Deanna’s Guiding Readers Unit for August and September. I just LOVE this unit!! It’s so easy to implement, it’s VERY thorough and has such fun and meaningful activities included!
This lesson was on Problem and Solution. We talked about the problem in the story (that the letters got hurt) and what possible solutions were. The kids never cease to amaze me! Look at these smart and creative solutions taht they came up with!!! Throwing coconuts out of the tree so that the tree wouldn’t be as heavy?!? I never would have thought of that! BRILLIANT!!!!
The lesson below is also from Deedee and Deanna’s Guiding Readers unit! It is on sequencing the events of a story. So…..I kind of FAILED at making a nice, pretty sequencing chart. Ha!!! This is called last minute improvising! 😉 I just wrote the numbers on the board and they had to select the next picture and hang it up with a magnet. Hey, it works…right?!
After sequencing the events as a class, it was time to sequence them on our own. We cut out the pictures and glued them in the correct order on a brown strip. I thought, hey! Why not make sequencing hats! So, we added some leaves and turned our sequencing strips into Chicka hats! So cute!!!
I couldn’t let the week go by without doing this favorite activity with a real coconut! We talked about our 5 senses and did this adorable activity from Deanna Jump!!

The kids have so much fun with our pattern block activities!!! In the picture below, one student has built Pete and the other student is working on a Chicka Tree. These fun and colorful mats and coordinating activities definitely bring some added fun to our math centers!!!
You can find these pattern block mats in my Pattern Block Puzzles for August and September pack!
What an awesome post!! I LOVE that you did a post with the guiding reading units from Wills and Jump! I have been wondering about them. It is so great to see those products in action from other teachers. I have your Chicka unit and I LOVE it! I also have ALL your pattern block units and LOVE them! We did the pencils and school houses just yesterday! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO!
I love DeeDee and Deanna’s Guiding Readers Units as well. I love how they really focus in on those key comprehension skills that need to be learned in kindergarten!! I love what you did to integrate science in this unit!! I will do that next year because it falls right during our unit on the 5 senses!! Thanks again for the great post!! Linda Groce
